Legend has it that the mighty lovers transformedthemselves into two rivers from the high mountains of Darjeeling and SikkimHimalayas and met at the confluence called Peshok or as Lepcha, an indigenoustribe of these mountains called it Panzoak which means ‘dense forest.’ Nestledbetween the insurmountably white and pristine Khangzendzonga and gurglingwaters of mighty River Teesta lies a dwelling around Peshok where the sunkisses the early dewdrops resting on bright and ripened oranges. Standing at analtitude of 200ft above sea level, the village lies in between the borders ofSikkim and Darjeeling hills. This altitude finds a perfect weather for thesegolden oranges to thrive.

The communitieswhich has been thriving on these produce has been sustaining themselves formore than 50 years has been mostly Nepalis, Tibetans, Bhutanese and Lepchas. Asthey live in the border of Darjeeling and Sikkim Himalayas and has been dividedby River Teesta, the culture and practices has been influenced by one another.Not only are they known for their bio-diversity but the communities alsonaturally practices recycling their produce or tries to make the optimumutilization of the produce. The community which practice this farming would bethe third generation.  At times whenthere were no political boundaries, their forefathers moved from the Sikkimmountains by crossing mighty River Teesta around 1920s. Thecommunities believes in the practice of organic lifestyle naturally and withtheir traditional practices, every produce  that is grown finds its way to go back tothe soil.

As you walk past the dense forest, an old mansmiles with his broken tooth and weathered hands pulling twigs and branchesfrom the trees. He tries to adjust long slender bamboos which  rests on these orchards. I try to ask to myamusement the reason behind those long slender bamboos and he humbly smiles andanswers ‘These bamboos are friends to these orange trees to support their branchesso that these trees do not fall or get hurt due to the weight of these ripe andjuicy oranges.’ He laughs at his own mirthful talk and picks up an orange andgives it to me. While I peel the orange, he asks for the peel and puts it inhis weathered pocket. I marvel the relationship that he has with that orangetree. He does not see it as a tree but as a friend.  And he looks farther to the other side of themountains and points his finger at the spot where spring water is born. He saysthat he prays at that spot because it is these spring water spots that allowshim and his communities to bear fruit at the right time and right season. Andas I look around I actually see these oranges blossom like gold overlooking atRiver Teesta and Sikkim mountains blessing the land.

Withchanging times and socio and cultural environment, these mountains are changingand so are the stories but these biodiversity friendly environment andpractices has beautifully evolved with modern sciences as the youth has alsobeen inspired by these practices and incorporated methods which will onlyfacilitate the farmers to adapt and enhance the distribution process. Withprocess like 'grafting' the seasonal plants find its growth and rotational cropfarming gives diversity and richness to the soil. As you walk up the hill tothe village from Teesta Bazaar, there is a whiff of fruity smell along therugged road and vibrant butterflies surround you only to find them sit demurelyon delicate and magnificent flowers. You are welcomed with colors of Nature,literally. There are slopes of tea bushes, forests bearing different fruits andflowers of different kinds. What bio-diversity! I think that butterflies have areason to visit this place as butterfliesare increasingly being recognised as valuable environmental indicators for thediversity of the forests. There are different flowers and fruits bearing atdifferent seasons. On our way to Sikkim or Kalimpong, the way has an array ofthe local by products of this organic produce.With the closer level. As the extraction unit iswithin the village, the farmers do not have to bargain their produce in auctionmarket of Siliguri (where the mountain people sell their produce) and areempowered to grow and sell their production at their cost. Like the oranges aresquashed for the orange juice and the seeds are sold off to the outlet whichsells seed in the marketplace while the pulp becomes fodder for the cattlefield. But an interesting aspect of these oranges produced in these mountainsis that the orange peel is not thrown away because considerable amounts ofmineral and vitamins holds rather higher levels of vitamin C than itsjuice. They have lot of benefits like citrus peel extract helps suppressinflammation, hence the peel is used for acne problems. these organically grownpeel is further dried in the warm sun. These dried orange peel is crushed andconverted into a powder as dehydration is the best way to retain its Vitamins.These powder is used as a facepack by the girls in the region as it forms avery essential skin toner and is mixed with water or milk as a pack. This isalso used as an essential ingredient for soap which is produced by theCo-operative societies in the village. This powder is also consumed to improvedigestion and speed metabolism, hence a dash of powder in a morning cup of tea startsthe villagers day well. The orange peel is also low in calories and high infiber, so one generally chew the peel as a natural breath freshener or rub theinside on your teeth to help with whitening and sensitivity. 

Darjeelingand Sikkim mountains are woven with powerful stories illustrating rich floraand fauna of the mountains ranging from high alpine to tropical region. Theoranges found in these mountains are mainly Darjeeling Mandarin which is alocal breed and the valley also boasts of having 90 varieties of citrus. Andwith every change of weather, the quality of oranges also change. Thesemountains thrive on unique geo- environmental perception where there aredifferent climatic zones with distinctive attributes giving birth to manymedicinal plants available in this hilly region. With modern times and modernusage, these small step to utilize an orange peel powder and not throw it awayonly helps us connect back to our roots and traditional methods which ourancestors have always been using. We can only but benefit from this usage.

Uses { Best before 2 years from date of pkng. } - 1. Boil water in a pot. Add one tea spoon of the blend into the pot and turn off the gas. Approx quantity is less than half tea spoon per cup . 2. Let it brew for 4 minutes or till it reaches it desired strength. It will acquire a pale liquor . 3. Pour tea into a cup and enjoy. 4. Should be taken without cream or milk. 5. Add sugar or honey as per taste.
