Indian Craft Research, Artisan Stories & Heritage Archives
Gaatha is a story of artisans, crafts and traditions. Without stories and knowledge, it becomes difficult to truly appreciate how a humble artisan, working with grace, patience and generations of inherited skill, creates what the world today often celebrates as luxury. Behind every handcrafted object lies not just labour, but a living tradition shaped by culture, community and human connection.
For more than 15 years, Gaatha team has been travelling across India to document, archive and share the diverse craft traditions and indigenous knowledge systems practiced by artisan communities. From remote villages and weaving settlements to tribal regions and folk art centres, our journey has been about understanding the people, processes and philosophies behind handmade creations. Through extensive research, storytelling and field documentation, we aim to preserve and celebrate the richness of India’s craft heritage.
At the same time, Gaatha actively supports artisan communities by providing a platform for their handmade products, stories and voices to reach a wider audience. We believe that every craft carries with it a deeper value system rooted in sustainability, cultural identity, slow living and respect for handmade processes. It is this transfer of values, knowledge and human connection, more than just the handicraft itself, that lies at the heart of the Gaatha project.
Through our collections, research archives and stories, we hope to build a greater appreciation for authentic handmade crafts and the artisan communities who continue to keep these traditions alive in a rapidly changing world.
