Surpur Art Painting

Surpur Art, also known as Surpur School of Painting, originated in the 18th century in the Surpur region of Karnataka under the patronage of the Nayaka rulers. Deeply influenced by both Deccan and Vijayanagara painting styles, Surpur art is known for its rich color palette, detailed ornamentation, and expressive figures. These paintings often depict mythological themes, courtly scenes, and religious narratives, especially episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. What makes Surpur art unique is its delicate brushwork, intricate jewelry depictions, and the subtle blend of local traditions with classical Indian aesthetics, making it a lesser-known but treasured chapter of India’s artistic heritage.
