Ajrakh is a traditional block printing craft of India, known for its intricate geometric patterns and use of natural dyes.
The origins of Ajrakh craft date back further than we can imagine. Excavations from the Indus Valley Civilization suggest that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing techniques in the Indian subcontinent. The word “Ajrakh” is believed to have stemmed from the Sanskrit term “a-jharat,” meaning “that which does not fade.” Additionally, since indigo is a primary color in Ajrakh textiles, some scholars link its name to the Arabic word “Azrak,” meaning “blue.”
Over time, Ajrakh has flourished, becoming one of India’s most celebrated textile crafts. Artisans have expanded beyond traditional prints and materials, adapting the craft to contemporary styles.
