This Ajrakh silk square scarf features a multicolour floral block printed pattern in earthy tones, developed using the traditional Ajrakh hand block printing technique practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. Crafted from silk, the fabric has a natural sheen that enhances the layering and richness of the printed design.
Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing process involving multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying. Each motif is applied using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring precise alignment across repeated cycles. In this piece, the design is composed of repetitive floral elements arranged in a structured layout, creating a continuous and balanced surface.
The colour palette includes a mix of earthy tones, typically achieved through natural dye processes using indigo, alizarin, and mineral mordants. The layered dyeing results in subtle tonal variation across the fabric, which is characteristic of handcrafted textiles rather than uniform industrial prints.
The scarf is constructed in a square format, allowing versatile styling as a neck scarf, head wrap, or accessory layer. The silk base provides a fluid drape, making it suitable for both everyday wear and occasion use. Tassels along the edges complete the finish.

Ajrakh Block Printing Kutch
Ajrakh is believed to have the universe, or sky as its theme. Blue symbolizes the sky, red symbolizes twilight and the night is indicated by black. The white geometric motifs interspersed on the fabric are like stars on a dark night.
