This Ajrakh hand block printed dupatta is a masterwork of celestial iconography and structural elegance, designed for the most distinguished formal occasions. Crafted from premium Modal silk—prized for its buttery texture, fluid drape, and radiant sheen—the garment features a saturated natural black base. The body is defined by large-scale "Chand" (moon) medallions, composed of thousands of rhythmic mustard gold "Bundi" dots that radiate outward to create a shimmering, ethereal effect against the dark field.
The generous 2.5-meter canvas allows for a multi-tiered pallu that acts as a showcase for the highest level of Kutch artisanal skill. The design transitions from the celestial body into a striking horizontal band of eight-pointed stars—a traditional Ajrakh symbol of the cosmic canopy. This leads into a final tier of "Mihrab" or arched medallions, providing a regal and architectural finish that anchors the fluid silk. Each impression is made with hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level precision to maintain the perfect circularity of the Chand motifs and the sharp registration of the tiered borders. Hand-finished tassels in madder red and teal provide a refined touch of tonal variety and movement.
The timeless color palette is achieved through purely organic processes: the deep blacks from fermented iron and jaggery, and the golden mustards from pomegranate rinds. These natural pigments provide a multi-dimensional depth of color that interacts beautifully with the silk fibers, ensuring the garment is as breathable as it is visually stunning. The luxurious texture of the Modal silk ensures a graceful fall that flatters the silhouette while maintaining the integrity of the heritage prints.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.
The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
