This Ajrakh silk square scarf in red and beige features a jali-inspired lattice pattern, created using the traditional Ajrakh hand block printing technique practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. Crafted from silk, the fabric has a natural sheen that enhances the precision and layering of the printed design.
Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing process involving multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying. Each pattern is applied using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring careful alignment across repeated cycles. In this piece, the design is structured as an interlocking lattice (jali), forming a continuous geometric surface.
The primary colour palette consists of red and beige tones, typically achieved through natural dye processes using alizarin and resist techniques. Indigo and black are introduced as secondary accents, adding contrast and depth to the overall composition. The result is a surface with slight tonal variation, characteristic of handcrafted textiles.
The jali pattern is visually associated with perforated architectural screens, where repeated geometric frameworks create both structure and intricacy. In textile form, this translates into a balanced, grid-like composition.

Ajrakh Block Printing Kutch
Ajrakh is believed to have the universe, or sky as its theme. Blue symbolizes the sky, red symbolizes twilight and the night is indicated by black. The white geometric motifs interspersed on the fabric are like stars on a dark night.
