This Ajrakh silk square scarf in brown features a circular medallion pattern in orange with indigo accents, developed using the traditional hand block printing technique practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. Crafted from silk, the fabric has a natural sheen that enhances the depth and definition of the printed motifs.

Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing process involving multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying. Each motif is applied using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring precise alignment across repeated cycles. In this piece, the design is structured around repeating circular medallions and rosettes, forming a balanced and symmetrical layout characteristic of Ajrakh compositions.

The brown base is achieved through natural dye processes using alizarin and mineral mordants, while the orange tones are developed through layered dyeing techniques. Indigo is introduced as an accent, adding contrast and depth to the overall composition. This layered approach results in subtle tonal variations across the fabric, which is a defining feature of handcrafted textiles.

Ajrakh Block Printing Kutch

Ajrakh is believed to have the universe, or sky as its theme. Blue symbolizes the sky, red symbolizes twilight and the night is indicated by black. The white geometric motifs interspersed on the fabric are like stars on a dark night.
