This Ajrakh silk square scarf in black features a traditional buti (dot) pattern, created using the hand block printing technique practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. Crafted from silk, the fabric has a natural sheen that enhances the contrast and clarity of the printed motifs.
Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing process that involves multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying. Each motif is applied using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring consistent alignment across repeated cycles. In this piece, the evenly spaced buti dots are arranged within a structured layout, framed by a detailed Ajrakh border.
The colour palette consists of a black base with rust and cream accents. These tones are achieved through layered natural dye processes, often involving indigo, alum, and iron-based mordants. The resulting surface shows slight tonal variations, which are characteristic of handcrafted textiles.
The scarf is made in a square format, allowing versatile styling as a neck scarf, head wrap, or accessory layer. The silk fabric provides a fluid drape, making it suitable for both everyday wear and occasion styling. Tassels along the edges add a subtle finishing detail.
In traditional textile vocabulary, buti refers to small, repeated motifs distributed across the fabric. In Ajrakh, these are adapted into balanced compositions that emphasize rhythm and spacing within the design.
Minor irregularities in print or colour are inherent to the hand block printing process and should be understood as indicators of manual craftsmanship.

Ajrakh Block Printing Kutch
Ajrakh is believed to have the universe, or sky as its theme. Blue symbolizes the sky, red symbolizes twilight and the night is indicated by black. The white geometric motifs interspersed on the fabric are like stars on a dark night.
