This Ajrakh silk square scarf in indigo and red features a jali-inspired lattice pattern, developed using the traditional Ajrakh hand block printing technique practiced in Kutch, Gujarat. Crafted from silk, the fabric has a natural sheen that enhances the depth and structure of the printed design.
Ajrakh printing is a resist-dyeing process involving multiple stages of printing, dyeing, washing, and drying. Each pattern is applied using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring precise alignment across repeated cycles. In this scarf, the design is composed of an interlocking lattice (jali) structure, creating a rhythmic and symmetrical surface.
The colour palette combines deep indigo with red tones, typically achieved through natural dye processes using indigo and alizarin along with mineral mordants. This layered dyeing results in subtle tonal variations rather than flat colour, which is characteristic of handcrafted textiles.
The jali pattern draws visual parallels to perforated stone screens seen in historical architecture, where repeating geometric frameworks create both structure and intricacy. In textile form, this translates into a continuous, grid-like composition that emphasizes precision and repetition.

Ajrakh Block Printing Kutch
Ajrakh is believed to have the universe, or sky as its theme. Blue symbolizes the sky, red symbolizes twilight and the night is indicated by black. The white geometric motifs interspersed on the fabric are like stars on a dark night.
