Appliqué

The origin of appliqué can be identified through its fabrication style, color palette, composition, and the forms of patterns used. In India, the history of appliqué work dates back to the times when the women of native communities in North Gujarat—such as the Kathis (landowners), Mahajans (businessmen), Rabaris (nomadic camel herders), and Muslims—crafted large canopies, hangings, friezes, bullock covers (Jhul), and ox-cart tents adorned with stitched human and animal figures.

Today, appliqué craft has evolved in many directions. Artisans are exploring a variety of apparel, including sarees, stoles, dupattas, and shirts, while home décor applications have also expanded. Intricately detailed wall art, cushion covers, and curtains now showcase the versatility of this traditional technique. Discover and shop unique appliqué creations at Gaatha’s online store.
