This Mulberry silk Ajrakh dupatta features a sophisticated teal-indigo field, adorned with a dense and precise geometric "star and clover" jaal. Developed using the heritage 16-step Ajrakh hand block printing technique of Kutch, Gujarat, this piece is crafted from premium Mulberry silk, offering a luxurious sheen and a smooth, fluid drape that elevates the complex artisanal motifs.
The central field is a masterclass in mathematical symmetry, featuring interlocking four-pointed stars and clover-like geometric forms. This intricate jaal transitions into a heavy horizontal "Palla" or end-piece, which showcases a distinctive minaret-inspired pattern set against vibrant bands of madder red. Each detail is meticulously hand-stamped using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level registration to ensure the geometric patterns remain perfectly aligned across the lustrous silk surface.
The cool teal and deep indigo tones are achieved through natural indigo vats, while the striking red accents in the palla are derived from madder root (alizarin). The deep black outlines are created from fermented iron mordants. These natural pigments interact with the Mulberry silk fibers to create a rich, luminous quality that produces a subtle iridescence as the fabric moves.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.
The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
