This Mulberry silk Ajrakh dupatta features a sophisticated black and teal-blue base, adorned with a precise geometric diamond "jaal" or mesh. Developed using the heritage 16-step Ajrakh hand block printing technique of Kutch, Gujarat, this piece is crafted from premium Mulberry silk, providing a luxurious luster and a fluid, graceful drape that enhances the sharp artisanal geometry.

The design is centered on a dense field of interlocking diamonds, where teal-indigo vats and terracotta red highlights create a vibrant yet grounded visual texture. This rhythmic center is anchored by heavy, multi-layered borders featuring intricate geometric bands, small "buti" motifs, and a solid deep black edge. Each detail is meticulously hand-stamped using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level registration to maintain the flawless alignment of the diamond grid across the lustrous silk surface.

The deep black and teal tones are achieved through natural dye processes using fermented iron and natural indigo, while the warm terracotta accents are derived from madder root. These organic pigments interact with the Mulberry silk fibers to create a rich, luminous depth of color that shifts elegantly with light and movement, a characteristic of genuine high-end Ajrakh textiles.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.

The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
