This Mulberry silk Ajrakh dupatta features an elegant beige-gold base adorned with a dense, interlocking geometric floral jaal in olive-brown. Developed using the heritage 16-step Ajrakh hand block printing technique of Kutch, Gujarat, this piece is crafted from premium Mulberry silk, providing a luxurious sheen and a smooth, fluid drape that enhances the sophisticated tonal palette of the artisanal motifs.
The central field is a rhythmic composition of circular floral medallions connected by a detailed geometric lattice, creating a continuous "jaal" that flows elegantly across the fabric. This intricate center is framed by a bold, multi-layered border featuring repeating geometric bands and a solid olive-brown edge. Each element is meticulously hand-stamped using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level precision to ensure the interlocking patterns remain flawlessly aligned across the lustrous silk surface.
The soft beige-gold and deep olive tones are achieved through natural dye processes using pomegranate rinds and mineral mordants, resulting in a color palette that is both grounded and opulent. These organic pigments interact with the Mulberry silk to create a multi-dimensional depth of color that shifts beautifully under different lighting conditions, characteristic of high-end natural-dyed textiles.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.
The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
