This Mulberry silk Ajrakh dupatta features a radiant mustard-gold field adorned with a complex interlocking geometric floral jaal. Developed using the heritage 16-step Ajrakh hand block printing technique of Kutch, Gujarat, this piece is crafted from premium Mulberry silk, providing a luxurious luster and a graceful, fluid drape that enhances the sophisticated tonal palette of the artisanal motifs.
The central field is a rhythmic composition of stylized floral medallions connected by a fine geometric lattice, creating a continuous "jaal" that flows elegantly across the fabric. The design is anchored by a heavy horizontal "Palla" or end-piece, which features a dense row of large circular floral medallions and intricate geometric bands. Each element is meticulously hand-stamped using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level precision to align the interlocking jaal with the ornate palla.
The warm mustard-gold and deep olive-brown tones are achieved through natural dye processes using pomegranate rinds and mineral mordants, resulting in a color palette that is both earthy and opulent. These organic pigments interact with the Mulberry silk to create a multi-dimensional depth of color that shifts beautifully under different lighting conditions, characteristic of high-end, genuine Ajrakh.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.
The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
