This Mulberry silk Ajrakh dupatta features a rich chocolate brown base adorned with a classic "Chand-Buti" or moon-medallion jaal. Developed using the heritage 16-step Ajrakh hand block printing technique of Kutch, Gujarat, this piece is crafted from premium Mulberry silk, providing a luxurious luster and a fluid, graceful drape that enhances the regal artisanal composition.

The central field is a rhythmic arrangement of interlocking teardrop and moon-shaped medallions, or butis, filled with delicate geometric and floral details in teal-indigo and cream. This dense field is dramatically framed by a heavy, multi-tiered border featuring an ornate "minaret" or pillar-style pattern and a solid chocolate brown edge. Each motif is meticulously hand-stamped using hand-carved wooden blocks, requiring master-level registration to align the complex jaal with the architectural borders.

The deep brown and indigo tones are achieved through natural dye processes using iron-based mordants and pomegranate rinds, while the vibrant red highlights in the border and the handcrafted tassels are derived from madder root. These organic pigments interact with the Mulberry silk fibers to create a multi-dimensional depth of color that shifts elegantly with light and movement, a characteristic of high-end, genuine Ajrakh.

The origin of Ajrakh can probably be older than we can imagine. Excavation sites of Indus Valley Civilization give evidence that Ajrakh was possibly one of the oldest printing methods the Indian subcontinent.

The etymology of “Ajrakh” can be traced to the Sanskrit word “a-jharat”, which means that which does not fade. Since indigo is one of the main colours of this textile, it is possible that Ajrak got its name from “Azrak”, which means “blue” in Arabic.
